The flag of Venezuela , which was first flown by Francisco de Miranda in 1806 , showed seven stars from May 1817, then eight stars from November 1817. While the flag of Greater Colombia (1819-1830) and then the flag of Venezuela (from 1830) initially showed no stars, seven stars were shown on the flag from 1859, their representation varied until the final legal determination in 1954. Since March 12th In 2006 the flag of Venezuela bears eight stars.
It is three-colored, the colors are generally interpreted as follows:
- Yellow symbolizes the sunshine and the golden soil of South America .
- Blue stands for independence from Spain and the sea that separates Venezuela from Spain.
- Red stands for courage and bloodshed during the Simón Bolívar revolution around Venezuela.
Eight white five-pointed stars in a blue stripe stand for the seven provinces that contributed to independence. The eighth star, introduced in 2006, goes back to a decree by Simón Bolívar of 1817, when the eighth star was supposed to honor the independence of Guyana .
