The national emblem of Venezuela is originally from the year 1836 and was several times - most recently with effect from 12 March 2006 - changed.
The shield is divided, with an upwardly curved cut and split at the top. At the top right , 24 gold ears of wheat can be seen in red, symbol of the 24 states of Venezuela. At the top left in the golden field there are two flags in the Greater Colombian colors and weapons. They symbolize the struggle for independence (sabers and swords), the struggle of the indigenous population ( bow and arrow ) and the struggle of the peasants and Afro-Venezuelan people (machete). Below is a galloping white stallion emblazoned on a blue background as a symbol of independence. The animal represents Simón Bolívar's white horse.
Above the coat of arms there are two crossed silver horns of plenty that give fruit as symbols of prosperity and wealth. Left and right of the coat of arms are a palm and a laurel branch as symbols for peace and fame.
Under the coat of arms, knotted with the branches, is a banner with the inscription
- 19 DE ABRIL DE 1810 INDEPENDENCIA
- 20 DE FEBRERO DE 1859 FEDERACION
- REPUBLICA BOLIVARIANA DE VENEZUELA
translated it means something like:
- April 19, 1810 independence
- February 20, 1859 Federation
- Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela
Change of coat of arms
When Hugo Chávez 's youngest daughter Rosa Inés said in 2006 that the horse should run to the left and not to the right in Venezuela's national coat of arms, Chávez agreed, and shortly afterwards the Asamblea Nacional , the Venezuelan parliament , voted on March 7, 2006 to the change of the coat of arms, which came into force on March 12, 2006, the day of the flag (Día de la Bandera). The heraldist Fabio Cassani Pironti implemented the reform of the national coat of arms on behalf of the National Assembly. The following changes have been made:
- The number of ears of corn has been increased from 20 to 24, which corresponds to the number of today's states in Venezuela .
- A bow and arrow and machete were added to the weapons symbolizing the struggle for independence to honor the participation of the indigenous people and African slaves.
- The horse in the lower field, which previously stood facing backwards (heraldic left) and had turned its head to heraldic right, now gallops to heraldic right .
- An eighth star has also been added to the flag .
