The coat of arms of Ecuador (official name: Escudo de armas del Ecuador ) was established in its current form in 1900, but mostly goes back to the version from 1845.

description

The heraldic shield has the shape of an ellipse on its main axis. In the background the Chimborazo , the river that rises from it, represents the Río Guayas , both as a symbol for the beauty and wealth of the Sierra and Costa . The steamship floating in the river also bears the name Guayas ; it was built in Guayaquil in 1841 as the first seaworthy steamship on the west coast of South America. Instead of a mast one is a symbol of trade and economic Caduceus shown. Above it the golden sun surrounded by the zodiac signs for Aries , Taurus , Gemini and Cancer, which represent the months of March to June, as a symbol for the duration of the Liberal Revolution ( March Revolution ) of 1845.

The condor , sitting above the coat of arms, stretches its wings as a symbol of the power, size and strength of Ecuador. The shield is flanked by four Ecuadorian flags . The branch of laurel protruding from the flags on the left represents the fame of the republic (or the fame of the heroes of independence). The palm branch protruding to the right is a symbol of peace. The shield stands over a bundle of rods which represents republican dignity.

history

Current flag of Ecuador

The coat of arms shield was introduced in this form for the first time after the first liberal revolution ( March Revolution ) of 1845, with the difference that the shield was flanked by the white-blue-white flags, which after the March Revolution replaced the later re-introduced tricolor . The coat of arms in its present form was established by Congress on October 31, 1900.

use

The coat of arms of Ecuador is carried by the president, the parliament, the ministries and many other authorities and public institutions. In addition, the coat of arms is on the flag of Ecuador and on many coins and banknotes of the former national currency sucre and the Ecuadorian centavos del dólar used today alongside the coins of the United States .
