The Río Guayas is a river in the western coastal lowlands of Ecuador . Together with its two source rivers, the Río Babahoyo (left) and Río Daule (right) and their tributaries, it forms one of the largest water catchment systems on the Pacific coast in South America . The Ecuadorian province of Guayas is named after the river, which, with its delta and tributaries, shapes the landscape.

River course

The actual Río Guayas arises at the height of the city of Guayaquil through the confluence of the Río Babahoyo (from left) and Río Daule (from right). It flows south and after about 60 kilometers flows into a wide delta in the Gulf of Guayaquil , the largest natural harbor on the Pacific coast of South America.

traffic

The Río Guayas is the most important trade waterway system in Ecuador. The port city of Guayaquil and the Durán opposite it are the largest neighboring cities. Both are connected by the longest bridge in Ecuador, the "Bridge of National Unity", officially called Puente Rafael Mendoza Avilés . It is 2,825 m long, 1,032 m from Guayaquil to the headland of La Puntilla and 1,793 m from this to Durán.

Hydrology

The tributaries of the Río Guayas arise on the slopes of the Cordillera Occidental , the western cordillera of the Andes , in the coastal lowlands or in the Cordillera Chongón-Colonche . Including the Río Daule as the longest source river, the Río Guayas is 389 kilometers long to the Gulf of Guayaquil. In total, its river system drains an area of over 32,112 km² (according to other sources: 34,500 km²). The mean runoff is 835 m² / s (according to other sources: 950 m² / s), which is slightly less than that of the Rhine . The discharge fluctuates seasonally. During the rainy season the Río Guayas carries 1500 m³ / s, during the dry season 230 m³ / s.

ecology

The landscape of the delta is characterized by highly endangered mangrove swamps . In addition, a group of islands formed from sediments in the delta, the largest of which is the island of Puná . The Río Guayas is the habitat of a number of rare, e. Some endemic animal and plant species, including especially fish (including tetra ) and birds.

Guayas is also the name of the steamship on the coat of arms of the flag of Ecuador . This was designed by Vicente Rocafuerte and put into operation on October 9, 1841. It was the first of its kind in South America and was named after the river.
