The Río Babahoyo is the 82 km long headwaters of the Río Guayas in the west of Ecuador in the provinces of Los Ríos and Guayas .
River course
The Río Babahoyo arises in the city of Babahoyo at the confluence of the Río San Pablo and Río Catarama . It flows mainly in a south-westerly direction through the coastal lowlands in western Ecuador. On the right bank of the river are the places Pimocha and Samborondón . Notable tributaries are the Río Vinces from the right and the Río Chimbo (Río Yaguachi) from the left. The Babahoyo River reaches the Guayaquil metropolitan area . On the right bank is La Puntilla , on the left bank Durán . The Río Babahoyo finally unites with the Río Daule coming from the north to the Río Guayas. The Puente de la Unidad Nacional road bridge spans the river just before it joins the Río Daule. The Río Babahoyo has a width of 1870 m at this point.
Hydrology
The Río Babahoyo drains an area of about 19,000 km². The catchment area extends over the eastern part of the coastal lowlands and the western flank of the Cordillera Occidental . The mean discharge is around 570 m³ / s. It thus contributes 60 percent to the total runoff of the Río Guayas. The discharge fluctuates very strongly depending on the season. In the rainy season it is six times higher than during the dry season.
Fish fauna
The fish fauna of the Río Babahoyo includes u. a. the prochilodontidae -type Ichthyoelephas humeralis and Goldsaumbuntbarsch ( Andinoacara rivulatus ).
