River course

The Río Chimbo rises on the western flank of the Chimborazo volcano at an altitude of about 4450  m . It initially flows for about 100 km in a predominantly southern direction through the Ecuadorian Western Cordillera (Cordillera Occidental). At river km 180 the Río Chimbo flows along the southern outskirts of Guaranda . The cities of San José de Chimbo and San Miguel are west of the river. At river kilometer 100 the Río Chimbo passes the small town Cumandá and reaches the Ecuadorian coastal lowlands. It flows west for about 70 km before turning north-northwest. At river kilometer 64, near the small town of Coronel Marcelino Maridueña , the Río Chanchán flows into the Río Chimbo from the left. At river kilometer 45 the river is dammed by a weir ( ). There a canal branches off to the south to the Río Taura . Below the confluence of the Río Milagro at river kilometer 10, the river is called Río Yaguachi . It flows through the city of Yaguachi Nuevo and finally flows into the Río Babahoyo, 30 km above its junction with the Río Daule to the Río Guayas .

Hydrology

The catchment area of the Río Chimbo covers around 4400 km². It extends over a central section of the Cordillera Occidental and reaches up to its highest mountain, the Chimborazo. A stretch of coastal lowlands between 5 and 15 km wide is also part of the catchment area. The western flank of the Cordillera Occidental is drained by neighboring rivers.
