Guaranda is a city in Ecuador . It has 22,199 inhabitants (2018) and is the capital of the province of Bolívar . Since it is located at an altitude of about 2650 m between seven hills (San Jacinto, Loma de Guaranda, San Bartolo, Cruzloma, Tililac, Talalac and El Mirador), it is also known as " Rome of Ecuador".

history

Guaranda was founded in 1534 by Sebastián de Belalcázar on the site of a Chimbo settlement, the inhabitants of which had resisted Pedro de Alvarado , who was advancing from the coast and Benalcázar's main competitor in the conquest of the Andean region around what is now Quito. During the colonial period, Guaranda belonged to the Corregimiento Chimbo, which was subordinate to the Real Audiencia de Quito or the Viceroyalty of New Granada. In 1775 Guaranda was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake and after its reconstruction it was the seat of the Corrigimiento Chimbo. From the early 19th century to the completion of the Guayaquil - Quito railway line in the early 20th century, Guaranda was a major transit station of national importance. Guaranda is about 60 km from Riobamba , which is about an hour's bus ride.

Culture

In Ecuador, the city is best known for its carnival , in which the custom of carnival jokes is carried out in an actually unusual, more pronounced way. Unlike in most other cities in Ecuador, in Guaranda you are not only splashed with water , but also thrown at , for example, flour or eggs .

On the days before and after the big carnival parade in Riobamba, there are numerous tourists , both from Ecuador and from abroad.
