The Río Vinces , in the upper reaches of the Río Quevedo , is a 250 km long right tributary of the Río Babahoyo in the west of Ecuador in the provinces of Los Ríos and Guayas .
River course
The Río Quevedo arises at the foot of the Cordillera Occidental at the confluence of the Río Toachi Grande and Río Baba . At river kilometer 240 the river is dammed by the dam Baba - Pico de Pato over a length of about 7 kilometers. Part of the river water is diverted to the west to the Daule-Peripa reservoir . It drives a hydropower plant. The Río Quevedo flows below the dam through the coastal lowlands from Ecuador to the south. The town of San Jacinto de Buena Fe is located on the western bank of the river at river kilometer 200 . At river kilometers 192 and 186, the rivers Río Lulu Grande and Río San Pablo flow into the Río Quevedo on the left. Shortly afterwards, at river kilometer 173, the river flows through the city of Quevedo . Between the river kilometers 130 and 95 the Río Quevedo flows to the southwest. Then near the small town of Palenque , the river turns back south. Now his name is Río Vinces . At river kilometer 65 he passes the town of Vinces . At river kilometer 51, in the village of Antonio Sotomayor , the Río Mastrantal branches off to the right and flows back into the Río Vinces at river km 30, west of the village of General Vernaza . 23 kilometers above the mouth, the Río Salitre branches off to the right at Salitre and flows to the Río Los Tintos , which flows into the Río Babahoyo below the Río Vinces. The mouth of the Río Vinces is 2 km north of Samborodon .
Catchment area
The Río Vinces drains an area of an estimated 6600 km². The catchment area extends over the eastern part of the coastal lowlands and part of the western flank of the Cordillera Occidental . In the west it borders on that of the Río Daule and in the east on that of the Río Catarama , the right source river of the Río Babahoyo.
Use of hydropower
Dam Baba - Pico de Pato
The dam ( ⊙ ) is located on the upper reaches of the Río Quevedo below the Río Baba and Río Toachi Grande. It was built in the late 2000s. The barrier structure consists of an approximately 1000 m long dam and a 160 m wide weir. The reservoir has a water surface of about 9 km². The dam is used for irrigation, flow control and energy generation.
Baba hydropower plant
The 5.2 km long canal Canal 3 leads west from the western bank of the reservoir . After 3.7 km the E25 ( Tronca de la Costa ) road crosses the canal. This ends at a dam with an attached hydropower plant ( ⊙ ). The power plant has an installed capacity of 45 MW. The facility is operated by CELEC (Corporación Eléctrica del Ecuador). Below the power plant, the water enters the river bed of the Río Chaune , a small river that flows into the Daule-Peripa reservoir. This means that the diverted water can be used for the Daule Peripa hydropower plant.
