Life

Schumnys parents were zootechnicians Konstantin Tarassowitsch Schumny and the Collective Farm Polina Ilyinichna Schumnaja. After attending secondary school in Jaduti in Borsna district, Schumny began studying in 1953 at the biological faculty of Lomonosov University Moscow (MGU), which he graduated in 1958 in botany .

After graduation, Schumny went to the Novosibirsk Academgorodok and worked in the Institute of Cytology and Genetics (IZiG) of the Siberian Department (SO) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AN-SSSR, since 1991 Russian Academy of Sciences (RAN)), in which he rose from laboratory assistant to scientific vice director. In 1965 he defended his candidate dissertation on the production and characterization of tetraploid maize , so that he was promoted to candidate in biological sciences . In 1973 he defended his doctoral dissertation on the heterosis effect .

Schumny's main research interests were polyploidy , heterosis and genetic engineering . He created models for the study of the heterosis effect and polyploidy. Studying the mechanisms of mutations , he found a unique mutation that allowed the activity of nitrate reductases to be increased.

In 1979 Schumny was elected a corresponding member of the AN-SSSR. In 1982 he was appointed professor of genetics. In 1985 he became director of the IZiG and chairman of the United Scientific Council on Biological Sciences of the SO of the AN-SSSR. In 1986 he became head of the Department of Cytology and Genetics at the Novosibirsk University (NGU). In 1990 he became a full member of the AN-SSSR. In 2004 he became president of the Russian Vawilow Society for Genetics and Breeding .

2005 remembered Schumny to the letter from the three hundred against Lysenkoism , who at the 1955 Politburo of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union was sent. It led to the resignation of Lysenko and his supporters from their leading positions and was only published in Pravda in January 1989 with cuts . In 2007 he retired and became a consultant to RAN.
