Akademgorodok ( Russian Академгородок - "academic town") is a district of Novosibirsk in Siberia ( Russia ) built in 1957 . The city of scientists is located about 20 km south of the center of Novosibirsk in the middle of birch and pine forests on the banks of the Ob reservoir . Akademgorodok is considered the scientific center of Siberia and is the seat of the Siberian Department of the Russian Academy of Sciences .

The Russian physicist and mathematician Mikhail Alexejewitsch Lavrentjew (Михаил Алексеевич Лаврентьев, 1900–1980), first chairman of the Siberian Department of the Soviet Academy of Sciences, played an important role in the establishment of the district . After its establishment, numerous research institutions and the Novosibirsk State University were set up within a very short time .

At the peak of Soviet research, the Novosibirsk district was home to 65,000 scientists and their families, and was a privileged zone for the academic elite. A total of around 200,000 people lived here. The computer Kronos (Computer) 2.6 designed by Alexei Nedoria and Swetlana Tichonowa was the only Soviet model to be produced in large series here.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union , Akademgorodok began to decline, as many scientists left the institutes for Western Europe or the USA . By 1999 the population had shrunk to around 50,000. The city still enjoys a good reputation in areas such as nuclear physics and microbiology. In addition, a large number of software companies have settled in the vicinity of the university in the course of the 1990s, which can fall back on many well-trained mathematicians and computer scientists. This is how the term Silicon Taiga , based on Silicon Valley , was coined , especially in the West and in the wake of the New Economy euphoria .

For the residents of Novosibirsk , Akademgorodok continues to be an attractive residential area.

Surrounded by forests and not far from the reservoir, with good connections to the city center at the same time, Akademgorodok consists of four districts: Микрорайон д, щ, Верхная Зона, Шлюз (Mikro rajon д (De), щ (Schtscha), Upper Zone, Lock) .

The microrajons д and щ are mainly pure residential districts in which the companies have only moderately settled. A military academy is the only higher education institution in the Щ district. In the upper zone, on the other hand, there are living spaces as well as faculties and company headquarters. As the name suggests, the Schleuse district is located at the lock, which regulates shipping traffic between the Ob reservoir and the Ob River. This is a residential area.

Akademgorodok belongs to the Sovietsky Rajon of the city of Novosibirsk. Other districts in the south of Novosibirsk are also assigned to this district.
