The Río Catarama (in sections the river also bears the names Río Chuquirahuas , Río Chipe , Río Zapotal and Río Ventanas ) is the 190 km long right source river of the Río Babahoyo in the west of Ecuador in the provinces of Cotopaxi and Los Ríos .

River course

The Río Catarama has its source in the province of Cotopaxi at an altitude of about 4300  m in the Cordillera Occidental , 15 km south of the Quilotoa crater lake . The river is called Río Chuquirahuas in the upper reaches . It initially flows 40 km to the west and reaches the Ecuadorian coastal lowlands. 15 km east of the city of Quevedo , the river turns south. Now the river is called Río Chipe . At river kilometer 58 the Río Sibimbe flows into the river coming from the east. This passes the city of Ventanas three kilometers below the confluence . At river kilometer 35 the river flows through the city of Catarama . Eventually it reaches the city of Babahoyo , where it joins the Río San Pablo to form the Río Babahoyo.

Hydrology

The Río Catarama drains an area of around 4400 km². The catchment area extends over the coastal lowlands directly at the foot of the mountains and over the western flank of the Cordillera Occidental. The Río Vinces runs further west in the coastal lowlands .
