Samborondón

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Samborondón is a city in Ecuador and the capital of a canton of the same name in the province of Guayas in Ecuador . The canton has around 45,000 inhabitants (including around 12,000 in the capital) and belongs to the urban agglomeration of Guayaquil , the largest city in Ecuador, which is also the capital of the Guayas province.

geography

The city of Samborondón is located on the La Puntilla peninsula between the Río Babahoyo and Río Daule , which merge at this point to form the Río Guayas . On the other side of the river is Guayaquil . Between Guayaquil and Samborondón is the Bridge of National Unity ; both are about five minutes away by car (pedestrians are prohibited from entering). This has resulted in most of the Samborondón residents working in Guayaquil.

Origin of name

There are two theories about the name: One is that the name is derived from Saint Brendan , who means San Borondón in Spanish . In Spain and, accordingly, in Latin America during the colonial period, places were often named after him. According to the other, the name goes back to a dark-skinned slave named Bartolomé Samborondón, who is said to have come to the area with the settler Fermín de Asiain around 1655 and was the only black man in the area. The name is considered to be the contraction of the words " Zambo / Sambo " and "Rendón", the former referring to African descent and the latter to a Spanish surname.

history

The official founding date of Samborondons is May 24th, 1776. At that time there was a chapel and a bell that is now in the Guayaquil City Museum. The area was mainly inhabited by indigenous people from the coastal region, Cayapas and Tsáchilas . When Guayaquil became independent in 1820, Samborondón was initially set up as a separate canton of the Free Province of Guayaquil in 1822, but after its connection to Greater Colombia and later Ecuador as a parish, it was reintegrated into the canton of Guayaquil. In 1829 Simón Bolívar stayed for 34 days in the barracks in El Buijo, in what is now the canton of Samborondón, which had already been the operations center of Antonio José de Sucre during the wars of independence a few years earlier. Here, on June 27, 1829, an armistice was signed between Guayaquil or Greater Colombia and the Peruvian troops who had been besieging the city for six months. On October 31, 1955, the parish was raised to the canton of the Republic of Ecuador.

Samborondón today

The town

Today the city of Samborondón on La Puntilla is primarily known as the domicile of prominent and wealthy residents of Guayaquil ( Álvaro Noboa , among others, lives here ). It consists mainly of a main street ( Vía a Samborondón ) with expensive gated communities ( urbanizaciones cerradas ) on both sides, although in recent years gated communities have been built not only for members of the upper class, but also increasingly for middle class families . There are also several schools on site, two Catholic and several Evangelical churches , a private clinic opened in 2008, a private university and two American-style shopping centers with a food court and cinemas. The Parque Histórico de Guayaquil , a zoo and botanical garden for the local fauna and flora with colonial replicas of prominent buildings of the city of Guayaquil is also located in Samborondón. The Parque Histórico is one of the main attractions of the city of Guayaquil.

The rural part of the canton of Samborondón

In contrast to the city of Samborondón, the rural parts of the canton, which are combined in the parish of Tarifa , are poor and rural. Its inhabitants live mainly from growing rice and raising livestock. The canton of Samborondón is therefore a prime example of the unequal distribution of income and wealth in Ecuador. The canton of Samborondón borders in the north on the canton Urbina Jado , in the west on Daule and Guayaquil , in the south on Durán and Yaguachi and in the east also on Yaguachi and in the extreme northeast on the province Los Ríos .
