La Asunción

La Asunción (founded in 1562 by Pedro González ) is the capital of the Venezuelan state of Nueva Esparta . During its history, the city changed its name several times and was called Villa del Espíritu Santo, Valle de Santa Lucía and La Margarita.
The city is 67 meters above sea level in the east of Margarita Island . The population is 28.309 (as of October 30, 2011). Santa Rosa Castle is located near La Asunción .
La Asunción is the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Margarita . The episcopal church is the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora de La Asunción .
