history
Barcelona was first founded in 1638 as Nueva Barcelona del Cerro Santo (Eng. "New Barcelona on the Sacred Hill") by Joan Orpí , who came from Piera near the Catalan capital and had lived in Barcelona and studied secular law. He is considered to be the last conquistador in Venezuela; under his leadership the territory of the Cumanogoto Indians, who lived in the region of what is now Barcelona, was subjugated.
In 1671 the place was re-founded by the governor Sancho Fernández de Angulo two kilometers south of the original founding of Orpí.
Population development
Barcelona's population development has been characterized by strong population growth over the past two decades. In 1981 the population of Barcelona was 156,461, compared to 221,792 souls in 1990. In 2005 it was estimated that 424,819 people lived in the city.
