Description and meaning
Traditionally, the colors of the national flag of Paraguay have the following meanings: red: justice (Justicia), white: peace (Paz), blue: freedom (Libertad)
The flag of Paraguay has a peculiarity: apart from the special status of Western Sahara , it is the only valid state flag to have a different front and back in addition to the flags of Saudi Arabia and Moldova . The national coat of arms is on the front and the Sello de Hacienda on the back . The emblem shows a sitting yellow lion in front of a brown pole, which is wearing a red Jacobin cap (Spanish: Gorro frigio ). The motto Paz y Justicia (Peace and Justice) is written over the cap .
history
The first mention of the red-white-blue tricolor comes from August 15, 1812, when it was hoisted in Asunción with a coat of arms in the middle. It dates back to 1806 when Paraguayan troops flied white, blue and red flags as they rushed in support of Buenos Aires against the British incursion. According to another version, the dictator José Gaspar Rodríguez de Francia introduced the flag, based on the French tricolor, as he was an admirer of Napoleon .
In the meantime, other flags are also mentioned. For the inauguration of the congress on June 17, 1811, a flag was hoisted with the colors red-yellow-blue and the king's coat of arms as an emblem. Other flags were red, white, and blue with a wide median and blue with a white star in the upper right corner.
The aspect ratio was changed several times. The coat of arms was changed in 1990 (front) and 2013 (front and back).
