history
After the statute for greater independence of Suriname within the Kingdom of the Netherlands came into force in December 1954, a need arose for national symbols of their own. Prime Minister Emanuels commissioned the design of its own flag in 1958. Ultimately, the idea and design of Noni Lichtveld to represent the colors of the five different population groups in the form of stars and to connect them with an ellipse , prevailed. The color black represented the group of African , brown the groups of Hindustan , yellow Javanese and Chinese , red indigenous and white European . The white background should symbolize the peaceful coexistence of the population groups. On December 8, 1959, this draft was approved by parliament and on December 15, Kingdom Day, it was publicly introduced along with the national anthem " God zij met ons Suriname ".
