Guanare is the capital of the Portuguese state in northwestern Venezuela .
It forms a district of the same name ( Municipio ), which in 2001 had 157,400 inhabitants. Today the city has more than 235,000 inhabitants.
Guanare lies on the edge of the southwestern steppe plain ( Llanos ), not far from the Andean slopes. A road connects it with the neighboring cities of San Carlos in the northeast, Barquisimeto on the other side of the mountains in the north and with Barinas in the southwest.
The city lives from agriculture and is a location of the agricultural university UNELLEZ. There are also other universities.
The multi-purpose stadium "Coliseo Carl Herrera Allen" holds around 7,500 spectators.
