Coro , officially Santa Ana de Coro , is the capital of the Venezuelan state of Falcón with about 258,000 inhabitants. It is located on the Caribbean Sea .
geography
The city is located on the north coast of Venezuela. In the north you can reach the Paraguaná peninsula via the isthmus of Médanos . In the northwest the Gulf of Coro extends as the marginal sea of the Gulf of Venezuela . The Netherlands Antilles lie off the coast : Aruba in the north and Curaçao in the northeast . In the south, after a few kilometers, the hilly area of the Sierra de Coro begins . The closest major cities are Barquisimeto in the south and Valencia in the southeast .
history
The city was founded on July 26, 1527 by the Spaniard Juan de Ampiés as Santa Ana de Coro . The term "Coro" comes from the Arawak language and means "wind". Coro was until 1547 - under the name of Neu-Augsburg - capital of the Wels colony of Little Venice and later the first diocese of Venezuela.
In August 1806 Francisco de Miranda landed on the coast with 500 men before the Wars of Independence in Venezuela and took control of Coro. However, he did not succeed in getting the population to support his efforts. After only five days he was driven away by the locals.
present
Coro is an important trading center for the region. The oil industry is of economic importance.
Due to their numerous churches and villas from the colonial era, including the Arcaya House and the cathedral , the old town of Coros and the port of La Vela were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1993 . Heavy storms in 2004/05 caused numerous damage to the city, including the historic buildings. That is why Coro was entered on the Red List of World Heritage in Danger in 2005 . However, the World Heritage Committee had already considered the registration in order to counteract the neglect of the buildings and unregulated urban development. The plan for a new waterfront was particularly criticized.
Other attractions are the Médanos. These are shifting dunes that stretch along the isthmus that connects Coro with the Paraguaná peninsula. The Médanos National Park was established in 1974 to protect them .
In the west of Coro, important fossils have been found near the city of Urumaco since the 1970s ; The Museo Paleontológico de Urumaco has existed since 2000 .
Town twinning
