The Gulf of Coro ( Spanish Golfete de Coro ) is a marginal sea between the Paraguaná peninsula in the north, the isthmus of Médanos in the east and the north coast of Venezuela . Its north-south extension is about 25 km. Its west-east extension varies between 20 and 40 km. The most famous place in the north is the town of Punto Fijo on the peninsula . On the mainland in the south is Coro , the capital of the state of Falcón . Due to the prevailing currents on the Caribbean coast , spits are formed (Las Piedras peninsula) that will separate the marginal sea from the Gulf of Venezuela in the future.
