history

The city of Coro, founded in 1527, was from 1528 to 1545 under the name of Neu-Augsburg, the Welser colonial town for Little Venice . During this time, on July 21, 1531, Pope Clement VII founded the Coro diocese, the first diocese in South America. The construction of the current cathedral began in 1583 in the center of the historic town center of Coro. The dome and the two side vaults were built by Francisco Ramírez between 1608 and 1615, when Bartolomé de Nevada, who had already been responsible for the construction of the Cathedral of La Asunción on Isla Margarita , completed the tower by 1620 and the entire structure by probably 1634 posed. As early as 1637 the seat of the diocese was moved to the capital as the Archdiocese of Caracas and the cathedral lost its rank. With the re-establishment of the diocese, the church became a cathedral again in 1922. In 1960 the church was added to the list of national historical monuments. Under Pope Paul VI. In 1977, on the occasion of the 450th anniversary of the city, the church received the title of a minor basilica. Due to various renovations for the second National Marian Congress on the occasion of the city's 400th anniversary, the cathedral was not part of the Coro World Heritage in 1993, despite later demolitions.

description

The plain white facade facing the Plaza Bolivar corresponds to the Venezuelan colonial style . On the right side is a square bell tower with an octagonal tower. The two-story facade is still influenced by the Renaissance and frames the main portal with semicircular columns. In the pediment there is a cornice on which there is a triangular ledge and two openings with arches.

The hall church with a sloping, dark wooden beam ceiling has three naves , the wider central nave is separated from the side aisles by rows of round arches, which rest on round columns with capitals in the Tuscan style. The choir with the high altar in the apse is separated by a round arch, and the side aisles also lead to altars.

In the church there is historical information about the eager and sterile search for El Dorado by the Welser.
