The Médanos National Park or Médanos de Coro National Park ( Spanish Parque Nacional Los Médanos de Coro ) is a national park in Venezuela . It is located in the state of Falcón on the isthmus of Médanos , which leads to the Paraguaná peninsula . The park was established in 1974.

The national park covers 91,280 hectares of desert , coast and salt marsh . The large dunes ("Médanos") extend over a length of five to 30 kilometers and can be up to 40 meters high. They constantly change their shape due to strong winds. Because of the very rare rainfall , the flora consists of prickly shrubs . The fauna is just as sparse and consists mainly of lizards , hares , anteaters , foxes , pigeons and falcons . The national park can be reached by bus or taxi from the nearby town of Coro .

In December 1999, heavy rain caused four lagoons to form in the dunes of the park . According to the experience of the national park rangers, such formations had not occurred before.
