Puerto Ayacucho has been the capital of the Venezuelan state of Amazonas since 1928 . The city with a little more than 100,000 inhabitants lies on the Orinoco and is also the capital of the Atures district .

Most of the inhabitants of Puerto Ayacucho are Creoles , but there are also a large number of indigenous people in the city, such as Yanomami , Bari, Piaroa and Guajibo .

history

Puerto Ayacucho was founded in 1924 as a port city on the Orinoco, together with Samariapo, 63 km south . The two cities are located north and south of the rapids Raudales de Aturas under which the Orinoco is navigable here. A road connects the two cities and thus enables the interrupted water transport route to be bridged, primarily for the removal of wood from the rainforest.

Until 1980 only the two cities were connected, but cut off from the rest of Venezuela. It was not until 1980 that the poor sand road was renewed and Puerto Ayacucho began to grow rapidly. The port has meanwhile lost its importance.

Puerto Ayacucho is located in the tropics of South America. The average annual temperature is 26.8 degrees Celsius and the average annual rainfall is 2260 millimeters. There is a weather station in the city itself.
