San Fernando de Apure is the capital of the Venezuelan state of Apure . Founded in 1788 by Spanish Capuchin missionaries as a base for converting the native Indian population to Christianity, the city is a port on the Río Apure and the trading center of the country's most important cattle-breeding area.
history
The city was on 28. February 1788 as Villa de San Fernando del Paso Real de Apure on the banks of the Rio Apure of Fernando de Miyares González , the Governor and Capitan General of New Granada established. At the foundation had him Don Juan Antonio Rodríguez and the Capuchin monk Fray Buenaventura de Benaocaz help. Since December 1, 1793 the village has been called " City ". Heron feathers were exported there in the 18th century .
In 1831 a private school for young men was founded by Master Juan Castellano . A school for younger children followed in 1844, before the "Federal High School" (el Colegio Federal de Segunda Categoría) was opened in 1875. It was not until the end of the 19th century that the "Federal School Leon XIII." opened.
Attractions
The bridge that crosses the Rio Apure in San Fernando was built in 1959 under the direction of the then President Rómulo Betancourt and was opened on February 1, 1961. It cost 8.5 million bolívar .
Well known is the Casa de Bolívar , a national-historical monument, which is located at the intersection of Comercio St. and Independencia St.. It is an 18th century armory and was formerly the home of General Miguel Guerrero . Today it houses a public library and the city administration's cultural offices.

San Fernando de Apure is the birthplace of the composer and guitarist Leopoldo Igarza (* 1941).
