Joropo

The Joropo is a popular Venezuelan dance and music style (also Música Llanera ) that originated in the Llanos around 300 years ago . In 1882 it was enacted as a national dance, and the famous Joropo song "Alma Llanera" ("The Soul of the Llanos") is considered the country's unofficial national anthem.

There are four main directions of Joropo in Venezuela: Central, Guayanés, Mirandino and Oriental from the regions in the center, the southwest and the northwest of the country. The individual components of the Joropo can be traced back to the camel caravans of the desert, the rhythm instruments ( maracas ) of the Venezuelan people, to baroque Spanish music, Bach , Soler , to flamenco and African rhythms. All in all there are 58 variations of the joropo, depending on the changing rhythms (3/4, 6/8), the instruments used, the presence of a singer and the speed. The music is mostly played by peasants ( llaneros ) at their dances and festivals, but over the past 25 years it has conquered cities where composers have been fascinated by the contrast between “raw energy” and complex musical structure. The Joropo is based on oral traditions of the local population.

In Colombia , a variation of this style of music with different characteristics emerged. In the Departamento de Arauca , the Joropo is played with mandolin, cuatro guitar and maracas, while the Joropo in the Departamentos Casanare and Meta also uses the tiple . In the 1960s, composer David Parales Bello introduced the Venezuelan style to Colombia, inspired by the time he spent in Apure , Venezuela. As a result, the mandolin and tiple were replaced by the harp (from the Venezuelan Joropo). The Colombian composer Luis Ariel Rey has also adopted the harp. To this day, the Venezuelan style is widespread in the Colombian Llanos.
