The flag of England is a red St. George's cross in a white field, its width is a fifth of the height of the flag. It is a simple application of the George Cross, which can be found on various flags and coats of arms of Christian countries, cities and families.

history

The legend of Georg slaying a dragon dates back to the 12th century. Its symbol was the red cross on a white background. It first appeared in the Crusades and was later used as a flag by the Republic of Genoa . From 1190 onwards, English ships used the George flag in the Mediterranean , which placed them under the protection of the Genoese fleet. The English king paid an annual tribute to Genoa for this . St. George became the patron saint of England in the 13th century.

The Saint George Cross has become part of the Union Jack , the national flag of the United Kingdom , as well as the Scottish version of the British royal coat of arms . Even during the Commonwealth of Nations, the Saint George Cross was found in the coat of arms of Great Britain .

In the flag of Guernsey , the George cross is complemented by a golden bar cross. Further examples of adaptations are the flag of London or the White Ensign of the Royal Navy . The “Red Hand Flag” of Northern Ireland also shows a red cross on a white background, supplemented by a six-pointed star, a red hand and the British crown. Although it is a derivative of the flag of Ulster , the choice of color was apparently deliberately made based on the flag of England in order to make it more "British".

Fusion with Christian mythology

A red cross on a white background is to even the legend on the sign Galahad to find the knight in Arthurian legend , who was most involved in the Grail quest and the Grail finally found. There it symbolizes a cross that Joseph of Arimathea drew with the blood caught in the Grail .
