The flag of Belize was adopted on September 21, 1981. On that day, Great Britain granted its colony British Honduras independence. In the center of the flag is the Belize coat of arms .

The flag shows a great continuity with an unofficial flag designed in 1950 for British Honduras. Only the two red stripes at the top and bottom were added with the independence of Belize .
