The flag of the U.S. Virgin Islands was adopted on May 17, 1921 . The aspect ratio is 2: 3. A yellow bald eagle , the heraldic animal of the USA, is depicted on a white base, with the heraldic shield of the USA on its chest. In the left claw the eagle holds a branch of laurel, in the right claw three arrows, which stand for the main islands. Left and right the eagle is flanked by the letters V and I, which stand for the native name Virgin Islands .
