Florida flag
The flag of Florida consists of a red St Andrews cross on a white background, with the Florida seal in the center.
The design was decided after a referendum in 1900. From 1868 to 1900, the flag of Florida consisted only of the state's seal on a white background. In the late 1890s, then Florida Governor Francis P. Fleming suggested adding a red cross so that the flag would not look like a white flag when there was slack .
The current design of the flag has been in use since 1985. That year the Florida seal was modified and officially redefined.
