The flag of the US state of Montana was adopted in 1905.

It shows the Montana seal centered on a blue background. Inside the seal are a plow, shovel, and pickaxe in a field in front of the Great Falls of the Missouri River . On the banner is the state motto: "Oro y plata" ( Spanish for "gold and silver" )

history

The current flag was adopted in 1905 and the word "Montana" above the seal was added in 1981. In 1985 the flag was changed again to define the font of "Montana". Before it was adopted as the state flag, it was used as a troop flag by volunteer organizations from Montana in the Spanish-American War of 1898.

Trivia

In a 2001 Internet vote by the North American Vexillological Association , this flag was ranked third from bottom of the ten worst flags of the US states and Canadian provinces.
