Flag of Maine
The flag of the US state of Maine was introduced in 1909.
layout
The flag shows Maine's seal on a blue field. Blue is the color of the Union.
The seal depicts an elk under a pine tree, and a farmer and a sailor who represent the work that the early settlers did.
The tree represents the shipbuilding industry in Maine. The star identified Maine as the former northernmost state. Shield holders are a farmer and a sailor.
Under the star is the state's Latin motto: "Dirigo." ("I lead.")
This motto is also found in the commercial and naval flag of 1939.
