The Seal of the State of Maine was introduced in June 1820th

history

Various details of the seal have changed over time, but the overall design and images used are the same as the original. In 1919, the Maine Legislature decided that no further changes should be made to the seal. The design established at the time is still in use today.

layout

The seal can be found in the same form in the center of the Maine flag .

The center of the seal is a shield that depicts an elk resting in front of a jaw. The whole thing in a field bordered by water and forest. To the left of the sign is a farmer leaning on his scythe , on the other side a sailor leaning on an anchor.

Above the shield is a red banner with the Latin motto " Dirigo " (" I lead ") in white letters, above it a stylized representation of the North Star .

Below the sign is a blue banner that says " Maine ".
