The seal is made up of two elliptical fields that are connected by palm branches.
The first field is dominated by a palm tree that rises above a fallen and crumbled tree. This representation is intended to commemorate the successful defense of the fort on Sullivan Island on June 28, 1776 against the British fleet.
The second field shows a female personification of hope (Latin: Spes ) walking across a beach with weapons scattered around. She is holding a laurel wreath in her hand in front of the rising sun .
There are two Latin mottos in this seal:
- " Dum spiro spero ."
- ( As long as I breathe, I hope. )
and
- " Animis opibusque parati "
- ( Ready of mind and means )
