The seal of the US state of South Dakota was adopted in 1885 as the official seal of the territory at the time.

The seal shows a landscape with symbols for industry, agriculture and transport.

At the top of the seal is a banner with the motto of the state:

" Under God the people rule. "
( Men rule under God. )

The seal is surrounded by English lettering:

" State of South Dakota - Great Seal - 1889 "
( South Dakota State - Great Seal - 1889 )

The seal can be found again in the flag of South Dakota .
