The District of Columbia seal is an official symbol of the United States' capital district.

The seal shows a personification of the goddess Lady Justice , who lays a wreath on a statue of the first US President George Washington , who gave the city of Washington, DC its name . In the background on the right is the Capitol , seat of the legislature of the United States of America. In the background on the left a train drives over a viaduct in front of a rising sun.

The Latin motto is on a banner:

Iustitia omnibus
("Justice for All")

The year 1871 refers to the year in which the District of Columbia was established by the District of Columbia Organic Act in its current form.
