The seal is found in the same form on the flag of Kansas .
At the top of the seal is the state's Latin motto:
- " Ad Astra per Aspera "
- On rough paths to the stars
The seal itself shows:
- A landscape with the rising sun (the east)
- A river with a steamer (trade)
- A log cabin and a man tilling the fields (agriculture)
- Covered wagons on their way west (pioneers)
- Indians hunting for buffalo
- 34 stars indicating that Kansas became the 34th state to join the United States
