The seal is found in the same form on the flag of Kansas .

At the top of the seal is the state's Latin motto:

" Ad Astra per Aspera "
On rough paths to the stars

The seal itself shows:

  • A landscape with the rising sun (the east)
  • A river with a steamer (trade)
  • A log cabin and a man tilling the fields (agriculture)
  • Covered wagons on their way west (pioneers)
  • Indians hunting for buffalo
  • 34 stars indicating that Kansas became the 34th state to join the United States
