Introduced 1798

The State of Mississippi Seal was introduced in 1798 when Mississippi became a territory of the United States .

When Mississippi became a state in 1817 , it was decided to keep the seal on.

description

In the middle of the seal is a bald eagle , the heraldic animal of the USA. He has spread his wings and lifted his head. His chest is decorated with a shield with eleven red and white stripes and eleven white stars on a blue background. These represent the eleven states of the confederation .

In its claws the eagle holds on the one hand an olive branch as a sign of the will to peace, on the other hand a quiver with arrows as a sign of the strength of war.

The outer ring of the seal contains the following English writing:

" The Great Seal of the State of Mississippi "
( The Great Seal of the State of Mississippi )

On January 31, 2014, the Mississippi Senate decided to add the phrase “In God We Trust” to the seal.
