Motto (motto) Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem

The seal of the US state of Massachusetts was adopted on December 13, 1780.

description

The state seal, which also adorns the flag of Massachusetts , shows an Algonquin Indian (" Native American, Massachuset " = Indian from the tribe of the Massachuset ) with leggings and moccasins , who has a golden bow in his right hand and a gold bow in his left hand holding a golden arrow with the tip pointing downwards. Heraldically to the right above this Indian is a silver five-pointed star, which stands for Massachusetts as one of the 13 founding states of the United States.

The shield is bordered by a blue banner with the Latin motto of the state in gold letters:

" Ense petit placidam sub libertate quietem. "
With the sword he seeks the quiet rest under the protection of freedom. "

An arm with a sword is depicted above the shield, which illustrates the first part of the motto, while the arrow pointing downwards illustrates the will to peace.

The Latin transcription of the seal reads:

" SIGILLUM REIPUBLICÆ MASSACHUSETTENSIS "
" Seal of the Republic of Massachusetts "
