It is based on a work by Gilbert Stewart and has been used since 1967 .

The outer ring contains the words Washington State Seal and the number 1889 , the year Washington became the State of the United States .

history

The seal was designed by jeweler Charles Talcott in 1889 and has also been on the flag of Washington since 1923 .

Originally, Mount Rainier was supposed to be represented in the seal, but Talcott suggested the image to Washington and prevailed with this suggestion.
