List of states in the United States
The List of States in the United States provides an overview of the current status of the states in the United States of America . Since the declaration of independence in 1776, the national territory has continuously expanded to the south and west. New areas have been gained through settlement, purchase or occupation, which, mostly after a certain time interval, have been divided into federal states. The United States currently consists of 50 such states. The youngest is Hawaii , which received this status in 1959. Hawaii is also the only state that is not on the North American mainland. Kentucky , Massachusetts , Pennsylvania and Virginia are officially known as the Commonwealth , but are legally equivalent to the other states. In addition, there are other territories that do not have state status, such as Puerto Rico , Guam or the District of Columbia .
Twenty-seven states are run by a governor from the Republican Party (R), and 23 states are run by a governor from the Democratic Party (D).
