John Kevin Stitt (* 28. December 1972 in Milton , Florida ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . In the gubernatorial election on November 6, 2018 , he was elected to succeed Mary Fallin . He took office as governor of the state of Oklahoma on January 14, 2019. He is the first US citizen with Indian ancestry to be elected governor of a US state .

Family, education and work

Stitt grew up in Norman , Oklahoma, where his father was a pastor. He attended Oklahoma State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting .

He worked in the financial sector for a number of years and started his own company called Gateway , a financial services company, in 2000 . Until 2018 he headed Gateway as CEO . He continues to serve as chairman . Under Stitt's leadership, Gateway was also involved in development aid abroad. Gateway helped to build and finance a school in Nigeria and to build and finance a farm for orphans in Uganda .

Stitt's great-grandfather, an Indian from the Cherokee tribe , was given land based on his ancestry. This is still family-owned today.

In 1998 he married Sarah and the marriage had six children. You live in Tulsa .

Political career

In August 2017, Stitt announced that it was running for governor of Oklahoma. Incumbent Mary Fallin was not allowed to run again due to a term limit in the Oklahoma Constitution.

In the Republican primaries, Stitt came in second. The following ballot he sat against the former mayor of Oklahoma City , Mick Cornett , by and was the Republican candidate for the general election, which took place on 6 November 2018th He received the support of Cornett, Ted Cruz , Rick Santorum , Tom Coburn and Donald Trump .

His opponent was Drew Edmondson ( Democrat ), a former Attorney General of Oklahoma. Although Oklahoma is seen as a relatively clear Republican-leaning state, polls indicated a head-to-head race between Stitt and Edmondson. This prompted US Vice President Mike Pence to make several campaign appearances for Stitt. Stitt won the election with 54.3% of the votes and was sworn in as the new governor of Oklahoma on January 14, 2019.

On July 15, 2020, Stitt announced that he had Covid-19 . Before that, a US governor had not been known to have been infected with Covid 19.
