William Cary Renfrow

William Cary Renfrow (born March 15, 1845 in Smithfield , North Carolina , † January 31, 1922 in Bentonville , Arkansas ) was an American politician and governor of the then Oklahoma Territory .

Life

He attended a public school, but then joined the army of the Confederate States of America and fought in the American Civil War .

In 1865 he moved to Arkansas. After Oklahoma was released for settlement, he moved to Norman there and worked there as a banker. In 1893 he became governor until 1897, during which time the Cherokee Strip was opened for settlement. He was involved in the Oklahoma Historical Society. He then worked in the mining business in Missouri and in the oil and gas industries in Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas . Renfrow died while traveling in Bentonville and was buried in Russellville, Arkansas .
