David Boren

David Lyle Boren (born April 21, 1941 in Washington, DC ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . He was the 21st governor of Oklahoma from 1975 to 1979 and from 1979 to 1994 the last Democratic US Senator for that state.

Early years and political advancement

David Boren, the son of Congressman Lyle Boren , first attended the public schools in Seminole (Oklahoma) and Bethesda ( Maryland ). He then graduated from Yale University until 1963 . He then continued his education at the University of Oxford in England. With a law degree at the University of Oklahoma , he finished his education in 1968. He then worked as a lawyer in Seminole.

Between 1968 and 1974 he was in the Oklahoma National Guard, where he made it to captain. He was also a member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives from 1967 to 1975 . In 1974 he was elected as his party's candidate for the new governor of his state.

Governor and senator

David Boren took up his new office on January 13, 1975. As governor, he mainly promoted education policy in Oklahoma. He also campaigned for the improvement of medical care in rural areas. In 1978 he sought a seat in the US Senate instead of re-election, which he also won.

Between 1979 and 1994, David Boren represented his state in Congress . He was a member of several Senate committees and headed the Intelligence Committee. Boren was instrumental in creating the National Security Education Act in 1992.

In particular, Boren was responsible for the failure of a broad energy tax initiative by the Bill Clinton administration in 1993 .

Another résumé

After his resignation as a senator in November 1994, Boren was associated with several political offices. Ultimately, he succeeded Richard L. Van Horn as President of the University of Oklahoma. He has held board positions at Texas Instruments and the parent company of American Airways . In 2017 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Boren has two children with his wife Molly Shi. Her son Dan represented the state of Oklahoma in the US House of Representatives from 2005 to 2013 .
