David Walters

David Lee Walters (born November 20, 1951 in Canute , Washita County , Oklahoma ) is an American politician . He was the 24th governor of the state of Oklahoma from 1991 to 1995 .

Early years and political advancement

David Walters attended the University of Oklahoma until 1973 and then studied at Harvard University until 1975 . He began his administrative career at the University of Oklahoma as a Management Systems and Project Administrator . In 1976 he also served on Governor David L. Boren's staff . Until 1982 he held various positions in the service of the University of Oklahoma. He then became the head of a private real estate company.

Walters belongs to the Democratic Party . In 1983 he became a member and chairman of a government committee in Oklahoma that dealt with public service reform. A year later, he served on a 100-person commission to reform the Oklahoma government. In 1990 he was elected as the new governor of his state, with 57.4 percent of the vote against Republican Bill Price.

Governor of Oklahoma

David Walters took up his new office on January 14, 1991. During his four-year term in office, the education budget was increased by a third. With the help of government bonds totaling $ 350 million, additional funds were made available for the expansion and construction of new educational institutions throughout the state. Walters was also the chairman of the National Governors Association . During his tenure, however, Walters also had to admit an electoral offense, which led to his not running again.

Another résumé

In 2002 Walters returned to the political scene. He won his party's nomination for a seat in the US Senate , but then lost to Republican incumbent Jim Inhofe in the elections . David Walters is married to Rhonda Smith, with whom he has three daughters. One son died in 1991.
