William C. Grimes

William C. Grimes (born November 6, 1857 in Lexington (Ohio) , † April 8, 1931 in Santa Monica ) was an American politician .

Life

Grimes was born in Lexington, Ohio in 1857. When he was 20, he moved to Nebraska . There he worked in the newspaper business and owned a trading company. Shortly before the Oklahoma Land Run (1889), Grimes moved to Kingfisher County there .

In 1901, he was governor of the Oklahoma Territory for 10 days . After that brief tenure, he moved to Oregon and later to California . He lived in Santa Monica, where he died in 1931.

In his political offices, Grimes stood up for the implementation of law in what was then still very chaotic and rather anarchic Oklahoma.

Political career

  • before 1898: Elected Sheriff of Johnson County, Nebraska
  • 1898: Grimes becomes Republican Party Leader, Mayor, and Marshal of the United States.
  • 1901: Secretary of the Oklahoma Territory (appointed by President McKinley )
  • 1901: Governor of the Oklahoma Territory
