George Washington Steele

George Washington Steele (born December 13, 1839 in Connersville , Fayette County , Indiana , †  July 12, 1922 in Marion , Indiana) was an American politician and the first governor of the Oklahoma Territory . He also represented the State of Indiana in the US House of Representatives.

Life

Steele graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University with a law degree. At age 20, he began training as a lawyer in his father's office in Hartford City , Indiana. He was just finished with it when the civil war broke out. He joined the volunteer army in May 1861 and made it to lieutenant. After the end of the war, he joined the regular army for ten years from February 23, 1866 to February 1, 1876. Then he switched to agriculture and banking.

Political career

His political career began with his election to the local council in 1880 and three re-elections. He represented as a Republican MP from March 4, 1881 to March 3, 1889 and from March 4, 1895 to March 3, 1903 an Indiana constituency in the United States House of Representatives . From 1890 to 1891 he was the first governor of the Oklahoma Territory. In 1894 he held his office again as a councilor in Indiana, in which he was confirmed twice.
