Francis Anthony "Frank" Keating (born February 10, 1944 in St. Louis , Missouri ) is an American lawyer and politician ( Republican Party ) and former governor of the state of Oklahoma .

Early years and political advancement

Frank Keating was born in St. Louis, but grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma; later he studied until 1966 at Georgetown University . He then completed a law degree at the University of Oklahoma , which he graduated in 1969. Before starting his political career, he worked for the FBI for a few years .

He was a member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives from 1973 to 1975, and then served on the State Senate from 1975 to 1981 . In 1981 he became a federal attorney for northern Oklahoma. Under the presidents Ronald Reagan and George Bush he was among other things Secretary of State in the Treasury ( Assistant Secretary of the Treasury ). During the tenure of these presidents, Keating also served in other federal ministries in higher offices. From 1988 to 1990 he was Associate Attorney General, the third highest position in the Justice Department ; after he was until 1993 deputy construction minister ( Deputy Secretary of Housing and Urban Development ).

In 1994, Frank Keating was elected as the new governor of his state. He only got 46.9 percent of the vote, but benefited from a split in the Democrats . Jack Mildren had prevailed in their primary against Wes Watkins , who then ran as an independent candidate and finished third behind Mildren (29.6) with a share of 23.5 percent.

Governor of Oklahoma

Keating took up his new position on January 9, 1995. After a re-election in 1998 - this time he clearly won with 57.9 percent of the vote against Laura Boyd - he was able to exercise it until January 13, 2003. Almost 200,000 new jobs were created in Oklahoma during his tenure. He supported school reform, environmental protection, the expansion of roads and a stricter interpretation of the penal laws. As governor, he also faced the aftermath of a bomb attack on a federal building in Oklahoma City . During his tenure, the long-planned dome of the Capitol was completed. After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , Oklahoma was also hit by the onset of the economic depression, which ended the upswing.

Another résumé

Even after the end of his governorship, Keating remained politically active. As early as 2000, he was under discussion as a Republican vice-presidential candidate . He was also a possible candidate for the office of Attorney General under President George W. Bush , but retired early as a candidate due to controversial acceptances of gifts during his governor's tenure. Keating then became President of the American Council of Life Insurers . During a visit to South Carolina on December 20, 2006, Keating announced his interest in running for the 2008 US presidential election . In January 2007 he announced his waiver. In the following election campaign he supported John McCain .

As a practicing Catholic, Keating was appointed by the Catholic bishops of the United States in 2002 to chair a commission of inquiry into the sexual abuse of minors by Catholic priests. Frank Keating now lives in McLean , Virginia . He is married to Catherine Dunn Heller, with whom he has three children. Since January 1, 2011, he has been CEO of the American Bankers Association .
