Jack Mildren

Larry Jack Mildren (born October 10, 1949 in Kingsville , Kleberg County , Texas , † May 22, 2008 ) was an American football player and later a politician ( Democratic Party ).

Career

Mildren attended the University of Oklahoma and played football as a quarterback . His nickname in college was "Godfather of the Wishbone" because he was able to achieve good results especially on the so-called Wishbone formation , in which a running back is directly behind the quarterback and two side by side behind him. Mildren set some records with the team in his 1971 senior season, but they have now been broken. For example, the team could run an average of 472.4 yards per game. He himself set the record for most career touchdown passes . He was named Sugar Bowl Most Valuable Player , and was on the All America Team and Academic All America Team .

He was drafted in the second round of the Baltimore Colts in 1972 . There he played two years as safety before moving to the New England Patriots for another year .

In 1990 he was elected Lieutenant Governor of Oklahoma ; he held this office from 1991 to 1995. In 1994 he failed in the election to governor on Republican Frank Keating . Mildren died in 2008 after suffering from cancer for several years.
