Jari Askins

Jari Askins (born April 27, 1953 in Duncan , Stephens County , Oklahoma ) is an American politician ( Democratic Party ) and was lieutenant governor of the state of Oklahoma from 2007 to 2011 .

Life

Askins studied journalism at the University of Oklahoma , where he received a BA in 1975 . She then attended the university's College of Law and received her Juris Doctorate in 1980 .

In 1994, Askins was elected to the Oklahoma House of Representatives, which she then served for twelve years. In 2006 she was elected lieutenant governor of her state and took office in January 2007. In the 2010 gubernatorial election , she no longer ran for this office, but was the Democratic candidate for the successor of the no longer running governor Brad Henry . She prevailed in the Democratic Primary against Drew Edmondson , the Attorney General of Oklahoma, and was then defeated in the election of the Republican Mary Fallin , her predecessor in the office of Lieutenant Governor.
