Spencer Bernard

Spencer Thomas Bernard (born February 5, 1918 in Rush Springs , Grady County , Oklahoma , †  March 9, 2001 there ) was an American politician . Between 1979 and 1987 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Oklahoma.

Career

Nothing is known about Spencer Bernard's youth and schooling. He spent most of his life in Rush Springs, where he ran a peanut processing company. He also worked in agriculture as a farmer and rancher. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1960 and 1978 he was a member of the Oklahoma House of Representatives . He was deputy chairman of this chamber for six years as Speaker pro Tempore .

In 1978, Bernard was elected lieutenant governor of Oklahoma alongside George Nigh . He held this office after a re-election between 1979 and 1987. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . After his time as Lieutenant Governor, he was no longer politically active. He died on March 9, 2001 in Rush Springs, where he was also buried.
