James E. Berry

James Edward Berry (born October 2, 1881 in Jackson County , Missouri , †  November 22, 1966 in Stillwater , Oklahoma ) was an American politician . Between 1935 and 1955 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Oklahoma.

Career

James Berry came to what would later become the state of Oklahoma as a teenager. He attended Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College , now Oklahoma State University in Stillwater. He later worked in the banking industry. In 1929 he became president of Stillwater Bank . Berry was also a member of the Oklahoma National Guard. In 1916 he was deployed during a border dispute with Mexico . During the First World War he was a captain in the American armed forces in France. Even after his return he remained a member of the National Guard, in which he achieved the rank of major. In the meantime he commanded the unit of this force stationed in Stillwater.

Politically, Berry joined the Democratic Party . In 1930 he applied unsuccessfully for the post of Lieutenant Governor of Oklahoma. In 1934 he was elected to this office alongside Ernest Marland , which he held after four re-elections between 1935 and 1955. He was Deputy Governor and Chairman of the State Senate . During this time he served after Ernest Marland under his successors Leon C. Phillips , Robert S. Kerr , Roy J. Turner and Johnston Murray .

After the end of his time as Lieutenant Governor, James Berry did not appear politically. He died in Stillwater on November 22, 1966. He had four children with his wife, Edwina Morrison.
